Originally from Cleveland, I've called Seattle home since 1986 by way of Boston and before that Ann Arbor. I've lived here longer than any other placed I've called home.
I may grumble about the place at times but I'm not going anywhere. I travel a lot and am known to say "I have to leave in order to stay."
I call West Seattle home. It's the best neighborhood in town IMHO.
I've found that nothing anchors you to a place like having kids. One of my few regrets is that it's in the corner of the country, a long way from many family and friends. They all wait for me to go to them; very few have come to visit over the years. Their loss.
The beer, seafood, and coffee are excellent. I hear the wine is good too (but who cares). As a rule, public bathrooms are impeccable. The natives are somewhat cold and standoffish. Must be the Scandinavian roots.
Below are the links to pages on JetCityOrange about various Seattle landmarks. If you live here or ever lived here, you know 'em. If you ever come to visit one or more is worth your consideration.
Space Needle • Seattle trivia • Seattle photos • world's first gas station • Aurora elephant
Chief Sealth statue • Fremont Troll • Fremont rocket • Lenin statue • Hat'n'Boots
If you come to visit, don't bring an umbrella and don't walk around downtown with that stupid blue tourist map. Seattle is bigger than the ride free zone. Yes it's cloudy but no, it doesn't rain all the time. And stop jaywalking while you're here.
Being genuinely leftist, an eco-greenie, a vegetarian of some stripe or flavor, a nerd, Buddhist, or any combination of the aforementioned doesn't elicit much attention around here. Everyone tends to be business casual. Bikes are mainstream. The food co-ops advertise on the sides of city buses.
If you live in Seattle, miss Seattle, or simply a little Seattle gossip try the JetCityOrange mobile site on your cell phone. Updated frequently, it's a shrill voice hidden in The Emerald City, all in the palm of your hand. You read, I'll write. Deal? Done.
